To be a barbarian today is to draw your own perimeter and build social networks and reciprocal relationships that are not dictated or controlled by the estate. It means drawing in the boundaries of your “we” so that you know exactly who your people are, who you can depend on, who cares about what happens to you, who you are obligated to, and where your loyalties lie. It’s easy to say that you “belong” to big, abstract groups of strangers who demand nothing of you.
Becoming a barbarian — becoming the kind of man who can belong to a tribe — requires a level of commitment that makes “good, modern, civilized men” uncomfortable.
