Greek legends also speak of the Dorian Invasion, or Dorian Migration, in which a people of unknown origins entered Greece from the north and took control of parts of the region. Exactly what form this ‘invasion’ took, and who the Dorians were, remains unknown, although there have been suggestions that this incursion was in part responsible for the collapse of Mycenaean civilization in Greece and the subsequent Dark Age.

Whether the ancestors of the Celts were involved in any of these events is not known, but a period of turbulence, including the collapse of three major civilizations, would have implications far across the Ancient world, and may have in part created the conditions for the rise of Celtic culture. It also suggests a troubled time in which the ability to defend would be as important as the ability to create and to build. This would have altered the path that Celtic society was developing along even if the Celts were not directly involved. This development can be traced back through preceding pre-Celtic and proto-Celtic societies, although their original point of origin is open to some debate.
