La Comisión Europea ha evitado este lunes tomar posición sobre la decisión de Estados Unidos de enviar bombas racimo a Kiev a pesar de que varios países de la UE, incluido España, se han mostrado en contra; si bien ha apuntado que "de manera general" en Bruselas apoyan el programa europeo para el suministro de armas a Ucrania para que "se defienda".
"Evidentemente es un asunto entre los países que suministran armas y Ucrania", ha advertido la portavoz comunitaria para Asuntos Exteriores, Nabila Massrali, quien ha precisado que el Ejecutivo comunitario está "al tanto" de la decisión de Washington pero no ha contestado a la pregunta de si el presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, consultó la medida con la jefa del Ejecutivo comunitario, Ursula von der Leyen.
"Lo que puedo decir, de manera general, es que apoyamos el suministro de munición y tenemos un gran paquete de suministro de armas a Ucrania con el fin de que se defienda por sí misma", ha razonado la portavoz, preguntada por el anuncio de Estados Unidos en una rueda de prensa en la capital comunitaria.
La Convención internacional sobre municiones en Racimo prohíbe desde 2008 el uso, desarrollo, producción, adquisición, almacenamiento y transferencia de esta clase de armamento. Se trata de un Tratado internacional jurídicamente vinculante al que se han adherido países europeos como España, Francia, Alemania, Reino o Italia.

The International Convention on Cluster Munitions prohibits the use, development, production, acquisition, storage and transfer of this class of weapons since 2008.
